Fancy Being a Racing Driver? Here’s How to Get Yourself in the British Touring Car Championship
Ever since the first PlayStation was released way back in 1994, and we were all given the Tosca Touring Car Championship games for Christmas, lads in the UK have spent many lost hours dreaming about what it would be like to race these amazing vehicles professionally.
Sure you can pay stupid amounts of money for an experience day where you’re allowed to take one around the track a couple of times, but in most cases, this just doesn’t cut the mustard. So, if, like me, you used to fall asleep with thoughts of being a true petrol head, you might well be glad to hear that achieving your childhood goal isn’t as farfetched as it once was.
In fact, almost every one of you has the potential to get yourselves into the British Touring Car Championships. Want to know how? Pay close attention and I’ll tell you. Practice PractiseObviously the very first thing you’ll need to do is buy a suitable car, but once you’ve done this it’s important that you spend a lot of time practicing. Although this may mean paying track fees and other costs, it’s far cheaper than paying for one of those racing experience days, and you won’t be restricted to your allotted two laps.
Remember that only the most skilled drivers with the best-financed teams make it into this elite event, so you’ve definitely got your work cut out, but it’s not impossible to make it to the bigtime; not by a longshot.
Race as Much as Possible The next thing you’ll need to focus on is racing. It can be difficult to say which method is best for breaking into touring car championships, as most successful drivers have taken completely different routes. That said if you join a racing club or get a job helping out at a popular track that can only work in your favor.
Ideally, you need to race at least once or twice per week, but try to ensure you move around, as racing on different tracks will help to improve your skills, whilst also getting your name out there. As with most things in this life, it’s not always so much about what you know, but rather who you know can make a drastic difference to potential success.
Sign to A Team Once you’ve done everything I’ve previously mentioned for a while, you may well be offered a place within a group like Honda Yuasa Racing Team, and if this happens you’re well on your way to achieving your goals; well done.
If you find it difficult to locate a team that holds any interest for you, just hang in there. The worst thing you can do in this situation is to give up. I’ll let you in on some fantastic advice, given to me by one of the wisest people I’ve ever met: “Never give up, because big shots and just small shots who keep shooting “And on that note, I wish you the best of luck. Remember that truly astonishing things can happen when we believe in ourselves.
